Lewis, et al. v. Green Dot Corporation, et al.
Case No. 2:16-cv-03557
District Court for the Central District of California

Case Summary

The lawsuit alleges that, due to technical issues occurring during a processor conversion, some holders of Green Dot prepaid debit cards and some holders of Walmart MoneyCards issued by Green Dot experienced a longer-than-anticipated disruption in service for portions of the period of time between May 15, 2016 and May 22, 2016 (the “Service Disruption”). The Defendants in the lawsuit deny that they are or can be held liable for the claims made in the lawsuit. The Settlement does not establish who is correct, but rather is a compromise to end the lawsuit.

I had the same problem. My friend put $200.00 on the card. I verified it before I went grocery shopping. When I got to the register they said it wouldn’t go through. 14. Rosey says:

My Son sent me $50.00 last week on a Green Dot Money PAC card. I tried to load it on my Walmart card and a big red banner came up and said..Due to the Fraud on Green Dot cards this card cannot be loaded. Click here for a refund. So I clicked it and another banner came up and said ..This card cannot be loaded. So I filled it out again and got…This refund has already been processed….. I have been on many web pages and have called so many numbers and just like everyone else I’ve read about, could never get a live person. In the past, I’ve used Green Dot for many years and it didn’t use to be like this. There was always a way to speak to someone. Especially it it appeared that you were having trouble with the prompts. You would get..Hold on while I transfer you to a specialist..WHAT HAPPENED!!!! So now they just never hear your problem and Keep Your Money, Based on what I’ve read and now experience I GUESS SO!!!!

    ADMIN – Hi Rosey,

This is a completely different issue. I encourage you to contact customer service.

  22. Ryan J Zuniga says:

Yes I clearly remember this time I was homeless and moving from hotel to hotel I did purchase a GreenDot card at Walmart and and I did load my money onto there because some hotels do not take reservations without a credit card it was a hotel that I stayed in that told me that my payment was not received but when I checked the Walmart greendot card funds we gone. I even put in several claims for charges that were made that I didn’t make. I also put money into their savings which was called The Vault and then they didn’t even want to give me my money from the vault. I spent a lot of time arguing and knights without a place to sleep with over this . In August I just shut the card down. However I did not receive any claim letter probably because I’m no longer at the address that I was at the time what do I do from here on out to meet the deadline.?

    ADMIN – Hi Ryan,

You are still within the deadline to file.

  23. R Griffin says:

Yes I bought a GreenDot a couple years ago due to the fact I thought it would be convenient to pay bills but they never really wants to explain to her how it really works so was rather kind of hard way inconvenience I experience money being disappeared off my card as well as others and they act like they didn’t know what I was talking about some quite upset about that

    ADMIN – Hi R,

If you feel you are a member of the class you still have time to file a claim.

  24. RochelleC says:

If you filed a claim, how and when will you be notified. Thank you.

    ADMIN – Hi Rochelle,

You will receive a check via mail if the case is finalized and all appeals have been cleared This takes place after the deadline has passed.

  25. Valerie carter says:

So after deadline we will get a check for 100 if no proof if you have proof then it’s more correct and when will the checks be mailed out

    ADMIN – Hi Valerie,

After the deadline has passed and all appeals have cleared the settlement administrator will make allocations that first address the claims of those with proof and secondarily address the claims of those without. As to the amount you will receive that will vary based on the number of qualified claims.

    • Valerie Carter says:

Ok thanks so how long will that take and when will checks be mailed out

      ADMIN – Hi Valerie,

After final hearing you wait for appeals and then the funds are distributed. This can take from months to years.

      • Valerie Carter says:

        Ok why so Long

        ADMIN – Hi Valerie,

Because the courts have a myriad of cases in their hands and a shortage of judges. Also because law firms need enough time to put their cases together.

  26. Natalie says:

I was sent a claim number and filed with proof of loss how do I find out what my settlement is going to be and when should I get paid

    ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

You will most likely get the amount lost due to the interruption as long as it is under $100 and a one month holiday from service fees. If there were a ton of people that applied the amount may be less since the settlement is set to be distributed as pro rata. Meaning all qualified applicants get an equal portion of the total pool after all expenses have been paid.

    • Natalie Hebert says:

I filed the claim with my proof of loss wanted to know when payments would be sent thanks

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

Payments usually take place after the deadline has passed and all appeals have been resolved.

  27. Angel M Dentigance says:

I HAVE A WALMART GREEN DOT MONEY CARD DURING THIS TIME PERIOD….
I HAD A PROBLEM PAYING MY BILLS AND RENT OFF MY CARD…..AND ALL SO
    SHOP ING ON LINE…..

    ADMIN – Hi Angel,

    Hopefully you filed a claim.

  28. Valerie Carter says:

Had checks been mailed out yet

    ADMIN – Hi Valerie,

No, the deadline for this case is not until February.

  29. Bryan says:

Currently on 1/4/18 i had over 2100.00 of unauthorized ATM withdrawals/purchases of 109.30 10x and 103.00 10x, along with 25.00$ in fees. I would llike to fill suit against them after reading a lot of reviews, i have a feeling i am not going to get that money back.

    ADMIN – Hi Bryan,

If you want to file a lawsuit against anybody you need to do it by securing your own lawyer or representing yourself. If you believe you are a part of this settlement please file a claim.

  30. Natalie Bear says:

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

  31. Jeremy Hughes says:

I got a claim number in the mail and filed a claim and my paperwork says the deadline was December 2th. Filed my claim December 1st. Then I Got a email saying claim approved along with a conformation number and it said I will recieve my check within 45 days….Today makes 45 days…now the deadline is February and from what I’m gathering from these reviews this could take months to years???? SayyWhatttt ???? So why would y’all tell me payment will be received within 45 and it’s obviously going to be over the 45 yard line. When do you reckon I might get that check I’ve heard so much about?

    ADMIN – Hi Jeremy,

That is the way class action settlements work. When appeals happen things get delayed.

  32. Valerie Carter says:

When will checks be mailed out

    ADMIN – Hi Valerie,

Claims are usually paid out after the fairness hearing and once all appeals have been resolved.

  33. Angelique Vargas says:

What is the eta on the checks being sent out?

    ADMIN – Hi Kay,

It will be a while. They extended the deadline to submit claims and we need to wait for any potential appeals.

  37. Rebecca Meador says:

I received a letter back in July. If I didn’t need to submit a claim, how much am I entitled too? The fee holiday is just the 3 dollar maintenance fee right?

If you need details about your settlement you need to contact the class action administrator directly.

  38. michael morrow says:

    ADMIN – Hi Karen,

    • Kay says:

I have not. And the number is automated it would be nice to speak to someone. If you do please update here and let us know Karen.

      ADMIN – Hi Kay,

Have you tried reaching out to Epiq directly?

    • Natalie says:

No and I’ve called them, they can’t give me any information on my claim not the amount if it was approved if the right proof was sent in all they said is that I was a part of the settlement. And if they needed more proof of from me they would contact me

  42. karen says:

Well, after both calling and emailing them, I’ve received no information back. It’s been 10 days. It’s 3 months past February1st. It appears we are stuck with the charges, fees and money taken from us.

    ADMIN – Hi Karen,

Have you tried reaching out to class counsel?

    • Natalie Hebert says:

How do you reach out to class Council I’ve tried the administrators now they’re telling me that because the case is so old they no longer have information on it

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

  43. Nita says:

I received a check for $3.00 for the one-month maintenance fee today, May 7,2018.

  44. Kay says:

I recieved a $3.00 holiday fee check today. That states everyone who is part of the class action will receive one. I hope this is not the only check.

  45. Nathan Baublitz says:

I received a $3.00 check in the mail as well. I provided documentation of my losses for over $500 I hope this isn’t the only check to be issued

    ADMIN – Hi Nathan,

It would be best to contact the class action administrator to obtain clarification.

    • Kim B says:

There is no way of getting a hold of anyone. Calling is just a recording and no one response via email. My claim was sent in June 2017. Still have not received anything.

      ADMIN – Hi Kim,

This is the company handling the claims. Reach out to them directly

      https://www.epiqglobal.com/en-us/home

      • Nita says:

You keep giving out this site and it is not informative as far as this lawsuit or people receiving compecompensation for monies lost !!!!!!! This site is no use!!!!!

        ADMIN – Hi Nita,

Sorry we could not help you. Hopefully you will find a place on the web that meets your informational needs.

  46. karen says:

I hope not. Let us know if you hear anything else. I’ve emailed, called, etc with no response. It costs me $3 just to cash a check. May as well save the $3 check to cash the bigger one and still pay $3. Lol

  47. karen says:

Here we are mid may and still no response from the company. I still haven’t so much as gotten the $3 check. I sent in a claim AND proof of losses incurred. Does this mean I get nothing?

    ADMIN – Hi Karen,

    Have you contacted class counsel?

  48. Nita says:

You have to deposit the check in your bank account..if you try and cash it at walmart there is a few ($3.00), so pretty much zero..deposit in your bank account.

    ADMIN – Hi Nita,

It is always a good idea to have a bank account.

  49. Natalie Hebert says:

I called the admin directly and she said because the case is so old they have no more information on it so what does that mean are we not going to get compensated. Is there anyone besides the administrator that I could call for information

    ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

What they are telling you is that the funds were distributed already and the administrator has closed shop.

    • Natalie Hebert says:

All she said was that she looked up the case but they had no information on it because the case was too old and she said she would have a supervisor called me back in 3 days. But they no longer had information on the case. I didn’t even know about the case I received a claim number from either the lawyers or the administrator saying that they got my name from breed. And I was affected by the disruption. I sent in my proof so I was supposed to get $750 minus the $50 they had already given me right after the disruption but I never received any compensation. And I think she was insinuating that I wasn’t going to get any money from the settlement.

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

I suspect you are unlikely to get money if the settlement had a secondary distribution or it was set up to donate the leftover funds to charity.

    • Natalie Hebert says:

I’m sorry I misread your answer can they do that why wasn’t I compensated for the money that is owed to me I was seriously affected by the disruption

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

There is a good chance your check was issued and lost in the mail. Since you did not escalate within the first 90 days you end up with no recourse.

  50. karen says:

Don’t feel horrible Natalie, I received nothing either. My case was over 200 in losses with documentation and statements. I got nothing. Not even the $3 check.

    • Natalie Hebert says:

what’s sad is that the administrators contacted me out the blue 2 notified me of the lawsuit gave me a claim number to file with and I didn’t even get the holiday fee I submitted sufficient of 700 in losses they had already given me the $50 as soon as the disruption happened I didn’t apply for it out the blue they sent me paperwork in the mail told me I was a part of settlement and they give me nothing not even an email to explain what happen how can they do this and get away with it

      ADMIN – Hi Natalie,

We are really sorry things did not work out.

      • Janet Dupre says:

Green Dot checks aren’t coming out till the end of June. They have not been issued yet.

        • karen says:

Thank you! Finally an answer! Please update when you receive yours.

        • karen says:

Did you receive the $3 check?

          • Janet Dupre says:

No I never received the $3.00 check but I believe that was the monthly service fee compensation and I do not have Walmart Money Card anymore.

          • karen says:

I don’t have mine anymore either. We shredded it once it was empty because after this happened it felt unreliable. I couldn’t risk that again. My landlord was ready to toss me and 6 kids on the street until the representative told her at the time that it wasn’t just me.

  51. karen says:

I didn’t even receive the $3 check. Does that mean I won’t get any part of the settlement?

    ADMIN – Hi Karen,

Have you contacted the class action administrator to check?

  52. Natalie Hebert says:

The administrator finally called me to let me know that they are processing out the claims and mailing out the checks . I am a part of the settlement but they have an issue any checks yet. He was not sure on a time frame but I didn’t receive the $3 check because I had already received a $50 credit right after the incident happen

  53. Markea little says:

I’ve provided my proof of purchase for my card to numerous different emails and I’m being told not received.

    ADMIN – Hi Markea,

Sorry about that. We wish we could help more.

  54. Kay says:

Spoke to admin. Checks wont be sent out until the end of July.

  55. Sandra says:

Finally received a call from 503# Checks will be mail at the end of July.
