Case Summary:

PlatePass is a system that automatically bills car renters for tolls incurred while driving along with an administrative fee. The administrative fee could often be much higher than the actual toll. For example on a $1 toll, the fee could be as high as $10.

Plaintiffs allege that they did not know they were being signed up to PlatePass and that the scheme was deceptive. Defendants deny the allegations. The parties both agreed to settle the case before it went to trial.

It seems like rental car companies hop from scheme to scheme. They rent the cars for ridiculously low prices, then try to make the money back with one silly novelty after another. $10/day for GPS or a car seat. $50 for insurance you don’t need. $8/gallon if you forget to fill up. Now this toll pass scheme.

I have a mental picture of Dr Evil and Mini Me at Hertz headquarters plotting one petty scheme after another to fleece a couple of dollars out of consumers.

  1. Got a good one for you: Hertz manager hit me from behind while I was stopped at a stop sign. They gave me a one of their rentals while my Jeep was getting a new tailgate & Paint job, since they have their own in house insurance. 2 months after I got my car back, I receive this call from Hertz Rental, “Ms Williams, it is our policy that if the insurance fails to pay the rental fee for the car, then the driver must pay & since we have not been paid, you must pay the bill.” My response, “Let me get this straight. You can’t get yourself to pay yourself, so now you expect me to pay you?” Their Response, “I I.. I.. know, it is rather embarrasing, but.. it is our policy…” I said, take me to court & just see how hard the judge laughs at you!” With that, I hung up & herd from them no more.

  2. I rented from Hertz in August 2006 and was charged the fee for the car seat and for insurance. I do not have the paperwork anymore, how would I go about getting it?
