Class Eligibility

The settlement (available here) affects two “Classes” of McAfee customers:

The “Auto-Renewal Class” consists of: All persons in the United States who paid McAfee for the automatic renewal of a subscription license for any McAfee software (including software branded under the McAfee or Intel Security names) from January 10, 2010 to February 10, 2015, and whose first auto-renewal charge was at a price greater than the price paid to McAfee for the initial subscription license. The Auto-Renewal Class does not include any person whose charges as described above were fully refunded by McAfee or fully credited through such person’s credit or debit card issuer.

The “Reference Price Class” consists of: All persons in the United States (1) who initially purchased from McAfee or manually renewed through McAfee a subscription license for any McAfee software (including software branded under the McAfee or Intel Security names) from January 10, 2010 to February 10, 2015, and (2) whose subscription license was initially purchased or manually renewed at a discounted price.

      The court has granted final approval of the settlement. However, an appeal of that decision has been filed with an appeals court. Distribution of benefits (payments and value certificates) in this matter will take place after this appeal and any others are resolved and the settlement becomes final and effective

    I have an enterprise account with McAfee and have for some time. Working in the legal community, I am well aware of the nature of these settlements and the spread of remedy across the class.

    My problem is that McAfee has “rigged” the result to continue their practices. They ask to apply the Certificate code to a renewal, but ask that if you want an alternative service then click, “continue shopping.” If you click, “continue shopping,” and select an item of lesser cost, the purchase is invalidated by tell the shopper that the password is incorrect.

    When “forgot password” is clicked, and the e-mail link returns to change your password, you get another e-mail that says, “password successfully changed.” But when the new password is applied in the new product purchase log-in, it tells you your password is incorrect.

    The only place you can apply your Certificate Code is at the link from the Case Administration weblink. When applied, it renews the same product as purchased, at a higher price than the better product you wanted, and you get an e-mail thanking you for the purchase, regardless of when the expiration of the product.

    When you go to your account, which, of course, you can do now because it is for a purchase, you cannot edit your account information or remove your credit card details. Either the Certificate is a scam or McAfee is continuing its bad habits by avoiding the spirit, if not the letter, of the ruling.

    As a long-time customer of Optimum, I have had McAfee through them for many years which is automatically renewed annually. I see that a $11.50 refund is to be distributed. Will that show up as a deduction on my monthly bill from Optimum? It seems that Optimum will have a list of all its customers receiving McAfee and it would be rather a waste of time for each of its customers to fill out specific forms for this rebate and for the administrators to send out rebates. I assume that Optimum would be required to reduce their patrons monthly bills accordingly. Please let me know how this refund will be distributed. Surely Optimum has included the cost of McAfee in their basic charge for service and would bear the responsibility. I await your clarification. Thanks.

    Per the terms individuals who are set for auto-renewal will receive certificates as follows:

    The distribution of value certificates in this matter is set to commence in mid-June. The value certificates will be valid for 150 days after issuance, must be used in a single purchase, are not redeemable for cash, and cannot be transferred. The value certificates may be applied to any purchase from McAfee of any McAfee or Intel Security consumer products, including McAfee or Intel Security consumer software licenses (including new purchases, manual renewals, or auto-renewals).2 Class Members who receive value certificates may apply them towards their next McAfee software auto-renewal, regardless of whether such auto-renewal is scheduled to occur before or after the expiration date for the value certificate. The value certificates may be applied to discounted and promotional pricing offered by McAfee, to a minimum price of zero (no cash refund will be available if use of a value certificate would drop a transaction below $0.00).

      I shared and experience your same frustration. I called 1-866-622-3911 and asked for customer support. They added the extension of $11.50 to my account and extended my coverage by 2 months. Once they have your email that you registered with, they have all the rebate info. Hope this helps.

    Another issue with McAfee… They send you emails telling you that your credit card needs updating (due to expiration date). But I intentionally ignore their emails because I plan to discontinue their service, they manually advance the expiration date on my credit card and charge my credit card for the renewal.

    I just received an $11.50 check in the mail payable to Charles Finley. Guess what? I completed the paperwork in the past and my name is not Charles; it is Terrance so I cannot cash it. When I called the number it went into the abyss and I was not able to reach a human being to ask them to reissue the check. OY! Bureaucracy.

    What is the claims administrator doing to help remedy these. The piddly amount of the settlement isn’t my concern, it’s the way this is being handled–another bamboozle by McAfee!!

    McAfee remembers your login, and if you haven’t logged out, you will be directed to the McAfee store page. But. if you log out in the “my account” profile page, when you follow the link in the e-mail you will be presented with a page where you can “Log in to redeem your value certificate”. Unfortunately, I ended up at guess where? the McAfee store.
    It may have something to do with me changing my e-mail address several weeks ago, Has anyone had any success with this navigawtion path?

    I don’t think there is a clause that makes accommodations for your situation. In the future it would be wise to give power of attorney to a friend or relative to make sure your affairs are dealt with in a timely manner.

    It is best to check monthly on all settlements. The window to escalate once the checks have been issued is usually less than 90 days.

    I never got a refund check nor a partial payment for McAfee products. I had filed way back in 10/2016. Never heard anything more than the confirmation email that I was registered. This is bogus! To tell us that we only had 90 days after the hearing to claim our money is purely ridiculous. Seems to me that this was an exercise in futility. If there is a way to determine how or when the payments were disbursed I’d love to hear it.

    Like quite a few other people, I never received my $11.50 check, nor did I receive notice that the settlement had been finalized or that we had to do anything special to receive our check. My personal ID number is BOT001993899 and Conf Code # 60073.
    Obviously you are saying that all payouts have been made, but obviously not all received their checks. When were the checks actually mailed out? Are we just out of luck, or is there any way to still be paid our refund or settlement check?

    This late into the game you are out of luck. Usually within 90 days of the checks being mailed out you can still escalate and get something.
